3 IT mergers, acquisitions announced in September

Here are three key health IT acquisitions that have been announced or have closed in September.

1. Humana looking to buy primary care provider Cano Health

On Sept. 22, The Wall Street Journal reported that Humana is looking to acquire primary care provider Cano Health. People familiar with the situation told the Journal that discussions between Humana and Cano are serious, and assuming talks don't break down, a deal could be agreed upon as soon as next week.

2. Judge signs off on UnitedHealth-Change deal, rejects DOJ challenge

On Sept. 19, a judge cleared the path for UnitedHealth Group to move forward with the $7.8 billion acquisition of Change Healthcare. The Justice Department sued to halt the deal earlier this year, calling it anticompetitive because Change Healthcare, which would be merged with UnitedHealth Group's data and consulting business Optum Insights, has access to data from insurer customers. However the judge rejected the Justice Department's lawsuit.

3. CVS Health to buy Signify for $8B

On Sept. 5, CVS Health entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Signify Health, a home health company, for about $8 billion. The deal will bring Signify's nationwide value-based provider network with more than 10,000 clinicians into CVS Health's portfolio.

A recent SEC filing revealed that CVS Health wasn't the only one to bid for Signify. According to the filing, there were five parties involved in the final bidding process, including UnitedHealth Group, Amazon and Option Care Health.

Ultimately, CVS Health came out on top acquiring Signify Health for $30.50 a share.
