Illinois long-term care hospital to close amid declining reimbursement

Vibra Hospital of Springfield (Ill.), a 50-bed, for-profit, long-term care facility, is slated to shut its doors, The State Journal-Register reported.

The hospital's interim CEO, Barbara Callaghan, said in a letter to patients and families that the hospital will close by March 31 because "reductions in healthcare reimbursement and changes in referral practices over the past 12 months have made continuing operations in this location unsustainable."

The number of affected patients and employees in the Illinois capital city is unclear, according to the report.

Ms. Callaghan said in her letter that Vibra Hospital has notified the Illinois Public Health Department  and will file a "90-day closing notice" to permanently close the facility by March 31.

"Prior to this formal filing, Vibra pursued several options as it sought to keep the Springfield facility open, including seeking additional funding and resources," she wrote. "These efforts have been unsuccessful."

She said patients will remain at Vibra Hospital until the planned time of discharge.
