Community Hospitals Post Record Profit of $52.9B in 2010

Community hospitals in the United States posted a record $52.9 billion in profit in 2010, far above the $34.4 billion in profit that was posted in 2009, according to AHA Hospital Statistics — 2012 Edition.


The cumulative profit total covers 4,985 community hospitals that were registered with the American Hospital Association in 2010. Other major 2010 financial indicators from the reference guide include the following:

•    Total net revenue for community hospitals was $730.9 billion, an increase of 5.8 percent from 2009.
•    Gross outpatient revenue totaled $887.4 billion, up 10.5 percent from 2009.
•    Gross inpatient revenue totaled $1.22 trillion, up 6.1 percent from 2009.
•    There were 9.95 million inpatient surgeries in 2010, the only year between 2006 and 2010 in which there were less than 10 million. Inpatient surgeries in 2010 dropped 1.4 percent from 2009.
•    There were 17.36 million outpatient surgeries in 2010, nearly identical to the total from 2009.
•    The total hospital expense per capita in 2010 was $2,193.70, compared with $1,848.10 in 2006.
