Boston-based Northeastern University announced on Oct. 3 the launch of the Institute for Experiential Artificial Intelligence, in which researchers will develop and collaborate with AI to solve problems in healthcare, security and sustainability.
The university has allocated $50 million for the new research hub. Its approximately 50 collaborators will include current faculty members and post-doctoral researchers, as well as up to 30 new hires, spanning a variety of disciplines, from digital humanities and law to healthcare, public policy and computer and materials sciences, Joseph Aoun, PhD, the university's president, wrote in a letter to the Northeastern community.
The hub's researchers will not only develop new AI-powered tools and solutions in collaboration with one another, but will also partner with industry, government and nongovernmental organization partners in the university's network of co-op employers to do so.
"We believe that the true promise of AI lies not in its ability to replace humans, but to optimize what humans do best," Dr. Aoun wrote. "By putting humans at the center, we will make intelligent machines our partners in cultivating the flourishing communities that the world needs."
