Patients want better protection for their health data, survey says

Patients want providers to give them the option to opt-out or into data sharing, according to a patient survey from the American Medical Association.

The data was compiled from a survey of 1,000 patients, which found nearly all patients expressed concern over data privacy protections and confusion regarding who can access personal health information.

Five things to know:

  1. Nearly 80 percent of patients want the ability to opt out of sharing some or all of their health data with third parties.

  2. More than 75 percent of patients want to opt-in before a company uses any of their health data.

  3. More than 75 percent of patients want to receive requests prior to a company using their health data for a new purpose.

  4. Fifty-nine percent of patients expressed concerns that personal health data would be used against them or their loved ones.

  5. Eighty-eight percent of patients believe that their physician or hospital should have the ability to review and verify the security of health apps before those apps gain access to their health data.
