Alaska health clinic to close due to financial troubles

Financial pressures have prompted the closure of an Alaskan community, according to a Sept. 13 report from the Anchorage Daily News.

Sunshine Community Health Center will close the Wasilla (Alaska) Community Health Clinic at the end of October 2022. The clinic opened in early 2021. The clinic employs 30 staff members and has seen about 4,200 patients since the facility opened.

Sunshine Community Health Center CEO Joshua Gilmore has been with the organization since July 2021. He told the Anchorage Daily News the closure was related to financial issues.

"Unfortunately, when I got here, we were able to determine very quickly that it was not financially sustainable. And that in fact, it was so unsustainable that if we didn’t close it very rapidly, then the remainder of our organization — our other two clinics — were at risk of closure as well," Mr. Gilmore said.

Mr. Gilmore also said the other two clinics that Sunshine Community Health Center runs in Talkeetna, Alaska, and Willow, Alaska, would remain open. The last day for patients to be seen at the Wasilla clinic is Oct. 28.
