New York hospital breaks ground on $52M new ER

Port Jefferson, N.Y.-based Mather Hospital broke ground on a new $52 million, 26,000-square-foot emergency room, greaterlongisland.com reported May 11.

Construction started May 4 and is expected to be completed in 2025. The new ER will include X-ray services, ultrasound, isolation rooms for infectious diseases and mental health treatment rooms.

"This is one of the most ambitious building projects in Mather Hospital's history," Executive Director Kevin McGeachy said. "We are re-imagining what emergency care can be for our community. The ED is our front door. More than three-quarters of the patients who are admitted to Mather come in through our ED."
