IBM Watson imaging AI goes live in 1st health system

IBM Watson Health Imaging's Patient Synopsis went live at Hardin Memorial Health in Elizabethtown, Ky., on May 6, making the health system the first to implement the artificial intelligence-powered software.

The Patient Synopsis program's AI was trained by radiologists to identify and extract important data from a patient's EHR, reading physician notes and other unstructured content to find clinically relevant information. Within seconds, that information is compiled into a single-page summary, organized into 12 categories.

Patient Synopsis integrates with and draws information from a health system's existing platforms, including picture archiving and communication systems.

"We are able to analyze data and extract relevant information in a way that we've never been able to before," radiologist Jesse Bryant, MD, the first to use the system at Hardin, said in a statement. "Patient Synopsis considers data from the present illness, past procedures, medications, indications from diagnostic reports, social and family history, demographics, vitals, allergies and labs. It gives us broader situational awareness that will help us make even better patient decisions and it does it in a single view."
