Study: Preoperative Safety Briefings Produced On-Time Starts, Positive Staff Attitudes

Preoperative safety briefings do not delay operating theater start time and are popular among staff, according to a study published in Journal of Patient Safety.

Researchers studied the effect of preoperative safety briefings on operating theater start times and staff attitudes. The safety briefing was a 5-10 minute meeting between anesthetic staff, surgeons and nursing staff to discuss the operating list before beginning surgery.

The authors found no statistical difference in operating theater start time with the safety briefings. Furthermore, staff reported positive attitudes toward the briefings: 97 percent said the briefing highlighted potential patient problems and 89 percent said it improved communication.
