Four Simple Modifications in OR Led to More Efficient Robot-Assisted Laparoscopic Procedure

Researchers found four simple modifications helped reduce costs and procedure times associated with robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, according to a study published in the Journal of Endourology.

For their study, researched implemented four modifications in an academic healthcare facility:

•    Adherence to time-oriented surgical goals
•    An anesthesia team
•    Simultaneous processing by nursing and urology staff during case turnover
•    Identification and elimination of unused disposable instruments

One-hundred RALRP cases before and after the new modifications were implemented were compared. Results showed reduced surgical, anesthesia and turnover times by 17.4 minutes, 4.5 minutes and 12.1 minutes, respectively, after the modifications were implemented. Payroll and costs associated with surgical supplies and the OR were also reduced, although there was no significant impact on anesthesia costs.
