Missouri health system expanding cancer center after 30% patient volume increase

Springfield, Mo.-based CoxHealth is building a $3.2 million dollar infusion center at its Hulston Cancer Center that's expected to be complete in December.

The new facility will nearly double the size of the existing infusion center, increasing capacity from 28 to 40 treatment stations.

More private rooms, a larger waiting area, nutrition stations and enhanced nurses' stations are also part of the expansion.

"If we can make any piece of [treatment] better for them, then that's what we try to do," Geoffrey Davison, director of oncology at CoxHealth, told local NBC affiliate KY3. "It's a difficult experience for them. It's a long process for most of them because you're not talking that they come one time and then they are done. It's multiple weeks, multiple years of this experience and so you want to make that as best as you possibly can."

In the last three years, the Hulston Cancer Center has seen a 30 percent increase in patient volume, Mr. Davison told KY3

CoxHealth Foundation raised nearly $800,000 to support the new center, including a $100,000 matching grant from the Hulston Family Foundation.

The health system is also seeking to grow it's team of oncologists from three to six.
