DC hospital allegedly fired director of nursing for reporting unlawful billing

The former director of nursing for emergency and trauma services at Washington, D.C.-based Howard University Hospital filed a lawsuit Nov. 8 alleging she was fired for reporting unlawful billing practices, according to Legal Newsline.

According to the lawsuit, Sharonda Brown was fired in November 2016 after reporting Howard University Hospital's allegedly unlawful billing to the District of Columbia Department of Health. She informed the DOH that patients "were being charged for admission without ever being admitted or provided services required for patient reimbursement," according to Legal Newsline.

After her discussions with the department of health, Ms. Brown claims she was investigated by the hospital's chief nursing officer and falsely accused of removing items from trauma bays.

Ms. Brown's lawsuit, pending in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, alleges retaliation in employment termination and retaliatory wrongful discharge. She is seeking back pay, compensatory damages and other relief.
