Local Lawrence + Memorial Hospital union under scrutiny for alleged misuse of funds

The local union representing more than 700 healthcare workers at New London, Conn.-based Lawrence + Memorial Hospital is under investigation over alleged misuse of funds, according to The Day.

The Connecticut chapter of the American Federation of Teachers is investigating one of its local affiliates, AFT local 5123, which represents L+M healthcare workers. AFT local 5123 members include administrative assistants, as well as other service and support workers.

AFT Connecticut spokesperson Matt O'Connor told The Day AFT Connecticut is investigating alleged misuse of AFT local 5123's treasury funds, but did not elaborate on the allegations or investigation.

Connie Fields, the newly elected president of AFT local 5123, who took over after the previous president resigned for personal reasons, declined to comment to the publication.

However, she did release a statement, provided to The Day via Mr. O'Connor.

"I can confirm that local leadership is working closely with both our state and national unions to resolve prior issues regarding use of funds from our treasury," the statement reads. "Those efforts are ongoing, so it would not be appropriate to comment publicly at this time."

Past AFT local 5123 President Harry Rodriguez told The Day his plans to retire from his position as coordinator for L+M's neonatal intensive care unit factored into his decision to resign as president, not allegations regarding misuse of funds. He declined to comment to the publication on whether knew about the investigation or if he personally was being investigated.
