Guthrie Corning workers approve union contract: 4 things to know

Workers at Guthrie Corning (N.Y.) Hospital on Wednesday approved a new contract agreement with management, according to a stargazette report.

Here are four things to know about the agreement.

1. The agreement was reached days before the old contract was set to expire.

2. The contract covers 535 registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, medical technologists and technicians, service, maintenance, and clerical employees, represented by 1199 SEIU.

3. Under the new contract, workers will receive a 5 percent increase in base pay through a series of raises beginning in January, plus step increases for longevity, according to the report. Direct care registered nurses will receive another 6 percent pay raise in addition to the 5 percent, plus step increases. Night shift wages will also go up.

4. In addition to the new contract, the hospital and union also agreed to collaborate on a patient safety program aimed at improving communication and teamwork, and at reducing medical errors, according to the report.
