Two Northern Indiana Hospitals Consider Affiliation Due to Healthcare Reform

Elkhart (Ind.) General Hospital and South Bend (Ind.) Memorial Hospital are in talks to affiliate under a joint board of directors, citing healthcare reform and future Medicare financial pressures as factors, according to an Elkhart Truth report.

The hospitals said caring for the growing number of people covered under Medicare and Medicaid "will be a big challenge," the report said.

In 2009, Elkhart General's unreimbursed Medicare expenses were $29.2 million while the unreimbursed Medicaid expenses were $18.7 million.

According to the report, the main goals of a potential affiliation would be the joint purchasing of electronic health record systems and bulk medical equipment purchases. There is no timetable for completing the partnership.
