NYU School of Medicine sees second apparent suicide in 5 days

A New York City-based NYU School of Medicine psychiatry resident reportedly died by suicide this past weekend, according to Washington Square News. The individual's death comes five days after a fourth-year medical student died of an apparent suicide May 1.

In a statement to Refinery29, the medical school said the psychiatry resident's death occurred off-site and is still under investigation.

The fourth-year medical student's body was discovered in a university dorm shortly before 11 a.m. May 1. She was on track to receive her MD degree later this month.

The NYU School of Medicine told Becker's Hospital Review in a May 10 statement, "We were saddened to learn of the recent deaths of one of our medical students and one of our psychiatry residents, both by suicide. Counseling and support services are being offered to students, faculty, and staff. On behalf of the institution, we extend our deepest condolences to their families, friends, classmates, and colleagues. Because of the sensitive nature of this issue, we will not be commenting further."
