Michigan Bill Would Expand Nurses' Roles

A bill currently in the Michigan legislature would allow certain advanced practice registered nurses to practice without physician supervision, according to a Cadillac News report.

The nurses would be certified nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, certified registered nurse anesthetist and certified nurse-midwives, according to the report. Giving nurses a larger role in patient care could alleviate the shortage of primary care physicians.

The president of the Michigan State Medical Society opposes the bill, saying it could lead to lack of medical oversight and that care should be led by physicians, not nurses, according to Cadillac News.

The bill has passed through the Michigan Senate and is currently awaiting a vote in the House.
