Aetna-Carilion Clinic ACO in Virginia Offers 30% Lower Premiums

Physician-led Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, Va., formed an accountable care organization with Hartford, Conn.-based health insurer Aetna in March 2011, and the partnership is saving money for people enrolled in the plan, according to a Roanoke Times report.

Aetna has started offering individual health plans with premiums 30 percent lower than previous offerings in Southwest Virginia. The lower premiums have been attributed, in part, to the fact the partnership between Carilion and Aetna compels both the provider and payor to share in the financial risk involved with paying for patient health, according to the report.

An Aetna spokesperson said some of the new individual plans cost beneficiaries less than $100 per month for coverage.

The individual plans are similar to the group ACO plans Aetna and Carilion have been offering to small businesses in Virginia.
