Lower Bucks Hospital to Close Cardiac Rehab Unit, Possibly Other Services

Lower Bucks Hospital in Bristol, Pa., will close its cardiac rehabilitation unit by the end of the month, according to a PhillyBurbs.com report.

The closure is expected to affect three employees, who may be able to transfer to other positions, according to the report. This announcement of the cardiac rehab's imminent closure follows the hospital's layoff of 30 employees.

The hospital may cut other services, such as its maternity unit, in the future in an effort to cut costs, according to the report. The facility, which was acquired by Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare Services in October, emerged from bankruptcy in January after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January 2010, according to the report.

Under the acquisition deal, Prime will continue to operate Lower Bucks Hospital as a community hospital with an "open and accessible" emergency department for at least five years and pay off the hospital's remaining liabilities in its bankruptcy reorganization plan, which includes at least $3.2 million, according to the report.
