Georgia Health Sciences University in Augusta has proposed adding a new cancer center to other planned expansion projects, according to a Rome News-Tribune report.
Yesterday, GHSU's board of regents authorized increasing the budget for a new medical commons building from $62 million to $76.5 million to add 40,000 square feet for a nursing program. Including the nursing program in the medical commons building eliminated the need for a $22 million nursing building that was originally proposed, according to the report.
The $22 million saved by cancelling the nursing building project can now go towards a cancer center. The GHSU board asked the General Assembly to appropriate $45 million for a cancer center and expects to match that amount in private donations, according to the report.
