14 hospital & health system chief technology officers to know

Here are 14 chief technology officers of hospitals and health systems who are tasked with developing and overseeing IT infrastructure, electronic compliance and security.

Rick Allen. CTO of Navicent Health System (Macon, Ga.). Mr. Allen has been the CTO of Navicent Health System for nearly a year. He was brought in to help stabilize and modernize the health system's infrastructure. Mr. Allen was given responsibilities of security officer and application services after arriving in the CTO position. Before joining Navicent Health System, he was CIO of a 300-bed hospital system in Metro Atlanta.

David Chou, MD. CTO of UW Medicine (Seattle). Dr. Chou is the director of medical informatics and a professor at the University of Washington and Harborview Medical Centers in the department of laboratory medicine as well as CTO of UW Medicine's information technology services. He has been with UW faculty since 1998, before which he was on staff at Cleveland Clinic.

Eric Christian. Vice President and CTO of Carolinas HealthCare System (Charlotte, N.C.). Mr. Christian stepped into this role in 2013 to ensure the infrastructure and technology framework of the system's policies and practices are in place and followed.

David Dully. Vice President of Information Technology and CTO of Baptist Health (Jacksonville, Fla.). Mr. Dully joined Baptist Health in 2001. He led Baptist Health's systemwide adoption of its EMR and has been a speaker at international information technology conferences. Mr. Dully is a fellow of the Health Care Advisory Board.

Gene Fernandez. Vice President and CTO of Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare (Memphis, Tenn.). In this position, which he took in 2013, Mr. Fernandez develops information technology infrastructure. He was previously the CIO of L.A. Care Health Plan in Los Angeles.

Moeen Haq. CTO of Sovereign Health System (Glen Rock, N.J.). Mr. Haq was promoted in 2015 from his initial role as director of product development and information systems at Sovereign Health Systems to CTO. He has expertise in EMR and practice management software, and he is the head executive for MD Vision, a Sovereign Health System research and development subsidiary focused on customized software development and IT services.

Matthew Heign. Vice President and CTO of UW Health (Madison, Wis.). Mr. Heign assumed his current position in September 2015 after serving as vice president and CTO of Lutheran Health Network in Fort Wayne, Ind. In his current role, he leads and develops the strategic vision for improving and integrating the hospital’s technology infrastructure and architecture.

Gary Horn. Vice President of Technical Services and CTO of Advocate Health Care (Downers Grove, Ill.). Mr. Horn is responsible for Advocate's network and voice infrastructure, electronic regulatory compliance, network security, data center operations and computing and storage environment. He became vice president, technical services in March 2011 and has more than 30 years of experience in clinical engineering, telecommunications and network development.

Tony L. Johnston. Vice President of Information Services and CTO of Cincinnati Children's. Mr. Johnston began his world-class career in Cincinnati Children’s Information Systems in 1989. Since his promotion to CTO in 2011, he has led the advancement of our technical infrastructure and staff in supporting the medical center to become the third ranked pediatric hospital in the nation. From the expansion of telehealth services for local and world-wide service, the technical support of an EHR across all phases of care to the implementation of the technical infrastructure for our new Proton Therapy Center, one of only two in the nation owned by a children’s hospital. Mr. Johnston works tirelessly to further Cincinnati Children’s mission to be the world leader in improving child health.

Michael Kramer. Vice President and CTO of Lifespan (Providence, R.I.). Mr. Kramer joined Lifespan in 2015 as vice president and CTO. He is responsible for the information systems infrastructure across the Lifespan health system including data center operations and its service desk.

Bill Lazarus. CTO of UCLA Health (Los Angeles). Mr. Lazarus brings more than 25 years of experience in IT and executive leadership to his CTO role. He is responsible for developing and delivering UCLA Health's core technology architecture, infrastructure and operations, among other responsibilities.

Jared Mabry. CIO and CTO of HCA Midwest Health (Kansas City, Mo.). Mr. Mabry oversees, develops and implements technological solutions for HCA Midwest Health, which has hospitals in Kansas, Missouri, Louisiana and Mississippi. He has experience developing teams and extensive knowledge in information technology.

Richard Skinner. CIO and CTO of University of Virginia Health System (Charlottesville). Mr. Skinner has more than 25 years of experience in healthcare information systems. He was a project manager for the development and implementation of the global medical information system for the Department of Defense before joining UVA Health System.

Wes Wright. CTO of Sutter Health (Sacramento). Mr. Wright assumed the CTO position at Sutter Health in 2015 after spending nearly seven years at Seattle Children's Hospital, where he served as senior vice president/CIO. He also has experience as the executive director of information services at Scripps Health in San Diego.
