How HHS digital service director plans to change healthcare

Digital Service Executive Director at HHS Shannon Sartin is among those in healthcare who believe the amount of technology is burdening patient care, according to Nextgov.

As the executive direct of digital service, she is spearheading the government's efforts to upgrade healthcare. However, with the influx of technology, Ms. Sartin said providers are left with added administrative tasks that can lead to impersonal, inefficient and expensive care.

Ms. Sartin has launched various projects to improve the way technology is used in healthcare. Last year she released an application programming interface, called Blue Button 2.0, which stored health information for around 53 million Medicare enrollees.

The Medicare patients were able to connect their medical records to the health-focused applications and services. Patients can also opt to donate their data to medical researchers through Blue Button. Since its release, more than 1,800 developers have signed up for the platform and dozens of apps are using Blue Button.

Ms. Sartin is now looking to improve the Quality Payment Program platform to upgrade its backend payment system. Currently, the system uses outdated software.

Don't expect "crazy flashy launches" every few months from Ms. Sartin. Rather, she plans to take a slow, incremental approach to improve CMS' payment process.
