HIMSS: 8 key points on compensation in health IT

The average salary for health IT professionals is $111,388, according to the HIMSS 2015 Compensation Survey.

Here are eight key points on health IT professional pay and benefits, according to the survey.

1. The median salary for health IT professionals is $90,000.

2. More than three-fourths of professionals (77 percent) received a salary increase in 2015.

3. The average salary increase was 3.91 percent.

4. Additionally, nearly half of professionals (47 percent) earned a bonus.

5. The median bonus for health IT professionals was 3 percent to 4 percent of their annual salary.

6. Health IT professionals in the Pacific region of the United States earned the highest mean salary at $127,117.

7. Professionals in the West South Central region of the country earned the lowest mean salary at $101,281.

8. The most common benefits for health IT professionals include:

•    Medical insurance: 96 percent
•    Dental insurance: 95 percent
•    Paid time off: 94 percent
•    401(k)/403(b) retirement savings plan: 94 percent
•    Life insurance: 89 percent

The survey also indicated many organizations are on the hunt for new talent. "Half of the IT professionals responding to the 2015 HIMSS Leadership Survey indicated that their organization was going to hire at least one IT professional in the upcoming year," Jennifer Horowitz, senior director of research for HIMSS North America told Becker's Hospital Review. "With regard to the specific roles that are in demand, other research has consistently told us that individuals with a clinical background are in demand in the industry. This includes clinical application support professionals, clinical informatics professionals and IT executives with a clinical background, such as a CMIO or CNIO."
