Facebook hires IBM scientist who helped build Watson for its AI efforts: 5 things to know

IBM's former vice president of its Watson platform, Jérôme Pesenti, PhD, took a new position at Facebook's budding artificial intelligence division, according to CNBC.

Here are five things to know.

1. Dr. Pesenti will serve as vice president of AI at the social media company. Several leaders from the Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research unit, including the head of Facebook's Applied Machine Learning group, will report to him.

2. Though Dr. Pesenti helped guide the development of IBM's Watson after IBM acquired the company he co-founded, Vivismimo, Dr. Presenti most recently served as CEO of BenevolentTech.

3. During his tenure at IBM, he served as vice president of Watson Platform, vice president of Watson Core Technology and chief scientist for big data.

4. Facebook also promoted Yann LeCun, PhD, director of FAIR — a group of more than 130 people from around the world — to chief AI scientist, according to CNBC.

5. These staffing changes should help with the transfer of technology between FAIR and its AML group, a spokesperson told CNBC.
