CMS Delays Stage 2 Meaningful Use; Proposed Rule Released

As expected, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has delayed Stage 2 of meaningful use of electronic health records one year until Oct. 1, 2013, according to an AHA report.

National Coordinator for Health Information Technology Farzad Mostashari announced the delay at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society conference.

Under the Stage 2 proposed rule, hospitals will be expected to meet 18 of 20 meaningful use objectives, according to presentations by CMS and Office of the National Coordinator staff.

According to the report, presenters indicated that CMS will propose imposing statutory Medicare payment penalties on hospitals for failure to meet meaningful use in fiscal year 2015. The proposed rule will also include requirements for sharing data with patients and information exchange among providers.
