Bipartisan task force to explore artificial intelligence

Congress is zeroing in on artificial intelligence with a new bipartisan taskforce, according to NBC News.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., minority leader of the House, unveiled efforts to develop a task force that will examine how the U.S. can lead in AI innovation while also keeping important guardrails to protect against cyberattacks, deep fakes and job replacement, according to the report.

Both leaders appointed 12 members of the task force, which will be chaired by Jay Obernolte, owner of a video game development company, and Ted Lieu, who was part of the team that developed a bill to regulate ChatGPT last year.

The task force will develop principles, recommendations and policy proposals to foster safe AI innovation.

Health system leaders are eager for legislators to set policies and issue guidance on appropriate AI use, according to a survey conducted by UPMC and KLAS Research. AI use in the healthcare setting must be HIPAA compliant and trustworthy to avoid biases that could hurt patient care. Only 16% of the respondents said they had systemwide governance policies around AI, with many waiting on federal government guidance before formalizing their policies.
