CHI Franciscan: Virtual Hospital

Tacoma, Wash.-based CHI Franciscan has made a dedication to innovation through the launch of its virtual hospital, which has cut wait times and improved outcomes. Within the virtual hospital, the internal medicine program has reduced hospitalists' response time for routine patient needs to three minutes for all CHI Franciscan hospital patients.

Additionally, the virtual hospital is equipped with a virtual companion program. This program has provided care to more than 5,000 patients and accounted for more than 600,000 hours of patient monitoring in the hospital.

As a whole, CHI Franciscan’s virtual hospital has helped meet patient needs by reducing wait times. The national average wait time for an urgent care visit is around 121 minutes. However, the average wait time to see a physician on CHI Franciscan’s Virtual Urgent Care is less than 15 minutes.

CHI Franciscan also partnered with GE Healthcare to develop a command center, which uses artificial intelligence and big data to synchronize all elements of a patient’s hospital experience throughout CHI Franciscan. The command center operates 24/7 and answers around 1.7 million calls annually, including approximately 2,000 code calls per month.
