Ransomware attack on Massachusetts lab exposes 350,000 patients

A ransomware attack on a Massachusetts fertility clinic forced it to take its computer systems offline and has affected 350,000 patients.

Four things to know:

  1. On Aug. 8, hackers accessed ReproSource's computer networks, according to an Oct. 8 news release. The lab discovered ransomware Aug. 10. An hour later, the lab shut down all network connection activity to mitigate risks.

  2. The lab discovered 350,000 patients' data may have been accessed, according to data reported to the Maine attorney general's office Oct. 8.

  3. Patients' names, addresses, birthdates and health-related information may have been exposed. For some patients, Social Security numbers, financial account information and driver's license numbers have been exposed.

  4. The investigation is ongoing, according to the release.
