62,000 patients' PHI exposed in attack on Mississippi clinic

An attack on Biloxi, Miss.-based Coastal Family Health Center, Mississippi's fourth-largest community healthcare provider, has exposed 62,342 patients.

The center serves more than 35,000 patients across 27 locations. Hackers attempted to shut down its computer systems on May 13, but the attempt failed, and the organization was still able to treat patients, according to a July 2 news release.

Three details:

  1. After the attack, Coastal Family launched an investigation. On June 4, the investigation revealed that some of its files were accessed during the attack. Potentially exposed data includes names, addresses, Social Security numbers, insurance and treatment information.

  2. On July 2, the center began notifying patients that their data had been exposed. The letters also gave victims resources they can use to monitor and protect their data.

  3. Coastal Family hired cybersecurity experts to help it change its procedures to prevent a similar event from happening in the future.
