California CEOs Average More Than $700K in Total Salary

A report by Payers & Providers, a California healthcare business publication, found the base salary for California hospital CEOs averaged $514,237 — or as much as $732,004 with bonuses, retirement money and expense accounts, according to a Ventura County Star report.

T. Michael Murray, CEO of St. John's hospitals in Oxnard and Camarillo, made $330,545 in 2008 and drew an additional $187,071 in bonuses and $73,113 in benefits and other compensation. Gary Wilde of Community Memorial Health System, which runs hospitals in Ventura and Ojai, made a total of $853,528.
Ronald Werft, CEO of Cottage Health System in Santa Barbara, made a base salary of $848,825 plus $546,846 in other compensation.

Consumer advocates and congressional leaders said the financial rewards revealed the need for more regulation on compensation in nonprofit entities, according to the report. They suggested regulations including caps on CEO salaries to the revocation of tax-exempt status for hospitals that don't spend enough on indigent care.
