University of Miami breaks ground on new medical center

Coral Gables, Fla.-based University of Miami has begun construction of its new medical center, The Capitolist reported Sept. 15.

The facility will be 363,000 square feet and include 110 exam rooms, 10 operating rooms and 33 cancer patient clinical treatment units. It will offer several specialty care departments such as cardiology, endocrinology, otolaryngology, gastroenterology, dermatology, and physical rehabilitation.

The university's medical students will also train at the facility. 

"As the only academic health system in South Florida, it is our mission to transform lives in our community and around the world by delivering high-quality health care and innovation," Julio Frenk, MD, PhD, president of the University of Miami told the publication. "This new facility, with the highly specialized care it will offer, builds upon the longstanding partnerships the University has in South Florida."
