Outpatient Volume Increases for HCA

Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA reported an increase in inpatient and outpatient volumes for the first quarter of 2011 compared to the previous year, according to a Business Wire report.

HCA operates 163 hospitals and 107 freestanding surgery centers in 20 states and Great Britain. The company was taken private in a 2006 leveraged buyout before returning to the public market in March 2011 at $30 per share. Shares recently traded up to $33.26.

The company reported that same-facility equivalent admissions increased 3.3 percent in the first quarter of 2011, reflecting a jump in inpatient and outpatient volume. Emergency room visits also increased by 11.3 percent, and the number of Medicare and uninsured admissions rose, according to the report.

HCA's first-quarter profit dropped 38 percent as a large charge related to its initial public offering brought down the operator's bottom line. Adjusted results beat Wall Street expectations, due primarily to the company's strong gains in patient volume and per-patient revenue.
