Study: Strong Safety Culture Correlated With Good Patient Outcomes

A well supported culture of safety improves staff productivity, reduces employee turnover and makes for better patient outcomes, according to a new study published in the journal of the National Association for Healthcare Quality, Journal for Healthcare Quality.

The study explored the relationship between safety cultures and patient outcomes, monitoring the latter through falls, falls with injury and hospital acquired pressure ulcers stage two or greater.

Researchers found that fewer negative patient outcomes occurred when staff experienced greater teamwork. Additionally, staff members that handled more intense workloads were more perceptive of safety cultures.

The study authors suggested that prioritizing patient safety may make business sense for healthcare facilities because it improves both staff and patient experiences of care.
