Study: Short-Term Hospital Readmissions Barely Affected by Long-Term Acute-Care Hospitals

Long-term acute-care hospitals have little effect on short-term acute-care hospital readmissions, according to a study in American Journal of Medical Quality.

Researchers examined the impact of 75 for-profit LTACHs on their associated host or primary referral STACHs' 30-day readmission rates for Medicare heart failure and pneumonia patients.

On average, 8 percent of heart failure LTACH Medicare inpatients were readmitted to the STACHs within 30 days of admission, accounting for 0.4 percent of the total number of heart failure readmissions to the STACHs in fiscal year 2010. Eight percent of pneumonia LTACH Medicare patients were readmitted to the STACHs, representing 0.8 percent of total pneumonia readmissions to STACHs.

The authors concluded that the LTACHs studied provided an appropriate level of care.
