Care coordination project in California rates well with patients

Results of a new survey show adults with complex medical needs who enrolled in Cal MediConnect, a demonstration project that provides intensive care coordination for some of Medi-Cal's most complex, highest-cost enrollees, are highly satisfied with the care they receive.

The SCAN Foundation, an independent public charity dedicated to improving healthcare access and care coordination, conducted the survey from February to April. It includes responses from 3,301 participants across nine California counties.

The program participants were particularly happy with the following six aspects of care:

  • Amount of time spent with a physician — 87 percent of Cal MediConnect enrollees are satisfied
  • Health plan information explaining benefits — 84 percent
  • Choice of physicians — 83 percent
  • How different health providers work together — 82 percent
  • Choice of hospitals — 81 percent
  • Wait times for getting an appointment with a physician — 77 percent

"Cal MediConnect is successfully engaging adults with complex care needs and earning the confidence of its members," said Bruce Chernof, MD, president and CEO of The SCAN Foundation. "Coordinated care that puts the individuals' needs front and center can make a huge a difference in their overall satisfaction while achieving better healthcare value."
