3 Most Important Factors Affecting Cancer Patients' Satisfaction

"Having a compassionate team of care providers" was the most important factor affecting cancer patients' overall satisfaction, according to a study (pdf) Healthgrades conducted on behalf of Cancer Treatment Centers of America.

The study included a survey asking cancer patients to rate their cancer treatment experience on a five-point scale on 13 factors, their likelihood of recommending the hospital on an 11-point scale and their overall satisfaction/dissatisfaction with their cancer care on a five-point scale. Patients then chose the three factors that contributed most to their satisfaction/dissatisfaction with their treatment.

Respondents included 700 patients treated for cancer at a CTCA hospital and 723 patients treated for cancer at a non-CTCA hospital between 2009 and 2011.

Both groups of respondents ranked the following three factors as most important to their satisfaction:

1. "Having a compassionate team of care providers."
2. "Providing me with a knowledgeable, competent physician(s)."
3. "Treating me as a human being and not just a person with a disease".
