Oklahoma Lawmakers to Study Health Insurance Exchanges

Oklahoma Sen. Gary Stanislawski (R-Tulsa) and Rep. Glen Mulready (R-Tulsa) have been chosen to lead a legislative committee that will study health insurance exchanges, which are required by the federal government, according to a news report by The Oklahoman.

Facing a deadline of 2014, states are required to set up insurance exchanges that would allow individuals and businesses to shop and compare various health plans. If these exchanges are not implemented by the 2014 deadline, the federal government will require tardy states to implement a federally established exchange.

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin recently turned down a $54 million federal grant that would help fund the infrastructure needed to set up the state's insurance exchange. Sen. Stanislawski and Rep. Mulready said they have "no preconceived ideas" about how the state should establish its insurance exchange and will take time to consider all options closely.
