Since 2012, nearly 100 percent of clinicians have been using computers in the clinical setting, according to a report by Epocrates, an athenahealth company. The advent and popularization of other mobile devices has allowed for a surge in mHealth and digital health use in healthcare settings.

Here are the top three professional tasks clinicians use on smartphones, tablets and computers.

1. Search: 48 percent

2. Access a professional resource: 37 percent

3. Communication with colleagues: 34 percent

Tablet

1. Electronic health record, notes or e-prescribing: 53 percent

2. Search: 35 percent

3. Access a professional resource: 16 percent

Computer

1. EHR, notes or e-prescribing: 74 percent

2. Search: 39 percent

3. Communication with colleagues: 23 percent
