7 Statistics on mHealth App Consumer Use

The use of mHealth and fitness apps sharply increased in the past year, and is likely to continue on this trajectory with the release of apps such as Apple's HealthKit, Google Fit and Samsung's S Health.

Here are seven statistics on consumer use of mHealth apps, as reported by Flurry Analytics, an app analytics and ad platform.

1. Consumer use of health and fitness apps on Flurry's platform increased 62 percent over the past six months, compared to a 33 percent growth for overall app usage.

2. The use of mHealth and fitness apps grew 87 percent faster than the overall industry.

3. In 2013, mHealth and fitness apps grew only 49 percent, compared to the 115 percent of the overall mobile app industry. That trend, though, appears to be changing this year, according to Flurry.

4. Flurry has identified "fitness fanatics," consumers who spend more than three times the average amount of time using such apps.

5. The fitness fanatics population is 62 percent female and 38 percent male.

6. The majority of fitness fanatics are between ages 35 and 54, at 47 percent, followed by ages 25 to 34, at 41 percent.

7. The vast majority — 80 percent — of fitness fanatics are sports fans. Forty percent of fitness fanatics are parents, and 35 percent are "avid runners."
