Forsyth County Department of Public Health Confirms 1st Chikungunya Case in North Carolina

Forsyth County Department of Public Health has confirmed the first case of chikungunya virus infection in a North Carolina patient.

Chikungunya is transmitted by infected mosquitoes, and its symptoms include fever and severe, often disabling, joint pains. The patient had recently traveled to the Caribbean. There is no specific treatment against the virus.

"The FCDPH is working closely with North Carolina Division of Public Health, providers and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help with diagnosis testing in symptomatic persons returning from the Caribbean or other areas of the world affected with outbreaks of chikungunya," said Health Director Marlon Hunter.
