40 CIO leadership moves & appointments in 2015

The CIO role is not only gaining traction in healthcare, but also evolving quickly as new needs and challenges in IT emerge. As 2015 nears its close, here are 40 CIOs who made leadership moves during year.

Omer F. Awan joined the Brewer-based Eastern Maine Healthcare System as vice president and senior regional CIO.

After nearly four years as CIO of HHS, Frank Baitman stepped down from his post. 

Rush Health, a network of Chicago-area physicians and hospitals, appointed Julie Bonello CIO.

Worcester, Mass.-based Spectrum Health Systems named Robert Brandner its first CIO.

The four-hospital University of Vermont Health Network in Burlington appointed Adam Buckley, MD, its new CIO.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham named Curtis Carver Jr., PhD, vice president of IT and CIO.

Cambridge (Mass.) Health Alliance selected Steve Carter as senior vice president of IT and CIO. 

LaVerne Council stepped in as CIO and assistant secretary for information technology of the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Dimitri J. Cruz was appointed the vice president of IT and CIO of Englewood (N.J.) Hospital and Medical Center.

Richard (Dick) Daniels was named executive vice president and CIO for Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente.

Norwegian American Hospital in Chicago welcomed Stephen DePooter as its new CIO.

Tahoe Forest Hospital District in Truckee, Calif., named Jake Dorst interim CEO to replace outgoing interim CEO Virginia Razo. Mr. Dorst was serving as Tahoe Forest Hospital District's CIO. 

Dan Drawbaugh, former CIO of the Pittsburgh-based UPMC, was named CEO of The Steadman Clinic and the Steadman Philippon Research Institute, both in Vail, Colo.

Chad Eckes, vice president and CIO of Winston Salem, N.C.-based Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, was named executive vice president and CFO of the hospital.

Allentown, Pa.-based Coordinated Health appointed Greg Flanagan as CIO.

Regional Medical Center in Anniston, Ala., promoted Anthony "Pete" Furlow to CIO of the Regional Medical Center's board.

Terry Halvorsen officially became the Department of Defense's permanent CIO after serving as acting CIO for approximately one year.

El Rio Community Hospital in Tucson, Ariz., named Nancy Johnson, PhD, CIO.

Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough, N.H., named Peter Johnson CIO.

Christopher Longhurst, MD, was appointed CIO of UC San Diego Health Sciences.

Regional One Health, based in Memphis, Tenn., named Jackie Lucas CIO and senior vice president.

McKesson selected Kathy McElligott to serve as the company's CIO and CTO.

Mark McMath was named CIO of Memphis, Tenn.-based Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare.

Dover, Del.-based Bayhealth appointed Richard Mohnk as the hospital's vice president and CIO.

The Maryland Health Benefit Exchange named Subramanian Muniasamy as CIO.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., named Keith Perry CIO.

Rockledge, Fla.-based Health First, an integrated delivery network in Central Florida, selected Alex Popowycz as senior vice president and CIO.

Pharmacy and retail chain Rite Aid hired Steve Rempel as CIO.

Guthrie, a hospital system based in Sayre, Pa., appointed Bert Robles as its new executive vice president and CIO.

President Barack Obama named Tony Scott U.S. CIO and administrator of the Office of Management and Budget's Office of Electronic Government and Information Technology.

Froedtert & the Medical College, based in Milwaukee, named William Showalter senior vice president and CIO.

Aurora Health Care, based in Milwaukee, appointed Preston Simons CIO. 

Dallas-based Texas Heath Resources appointed Joey Sudomir senior vice president of innovative technology solutions and CIO.

Deborah Heart & Lung Center, a specialty heart, lung and vascular hospital in Browns Mills, N.J., named Richard Temple vice president and CIO. 

Tim Theriault stepped down from his position as executive vice president and global CIO of Walgreens Boots Alliance.

Marilyn Tremblay, RN, MSN, resigned from her position as CIO at Regional Medical Center of Orangeburg and Calhoun Counties in Orangeburg, S.C., to become IT director of applications at Philadelphia-based Grand View Health.

Seattle-based Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center appointed Matthew Trunnell vice president and CIO.

Cincinnati-based TriHealth appointed John Ward as CIO, a position he held in the interim capacity since December 2014. 

Stephen Warren, deputy CIO of the Department of Veterans Affairs, left his position for a different federal CIO position.
