VA to Congress: Cybersecurity & data breach update

The Department of Veterans Affairs has released its Monthly Report to Congress on Data Incidents for the month of November.

The report details cybersecurity threats blocked or contained, as well as reported events.

Blocked or contained incidents

•    Intrusion attempts: 178,901,774
•    Malware: 621,526,267
•    Suspicious/malicious emails: 85,614,081
•    Infected medical devices: 0
•    Outgoing unencrypted emails: 61 associated privacy/security events; 12,939 total emails blocked

No veterans were affected by the blocked or contained incidents.

Reported events

•    Lost or stolen devices: 47
•    Lost personal identification verification cards: 156
•    Mishandled incidents: 64
•    Mismailed incidents: 114 paper mismailings; one pharmacy item mismailing out of 6,145,859 total mailings

The reported events affected 693 veterans.
