Small Physician Practices Less Likely to Adopt EHRs

Recent study findings suggest small physician practices are less likely to adopt or use electronic health record systems, according to research published in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association.

For their study, researchers mailed a survey to randomly selected physicians from the Physician Masterfile of the American Medical Association. Results showed that less than 2 percent of solo practitioners or two-physician practices have a fully functional EHR and five percent have a basic EHR. Comparatively, 13 percent of large physician practices (11 physicians or more) have a fully functional EHR and 26 percent have a basic EHR. Smaller practices were also more likely to report financial challenges than larger practices.
