Rural Hawaii County Hits 84% EHR Adoption Rate Through ONC Partnership

Rural healthcare providers in Hawaii County have announced an 84 percent electronic health record adoption rate as the result of a cooperative agreement with the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology.

The $16.1 million agreement was made three years ago by the Hawaii Island Beacon Community, one of 17 such organizations nationwide working with the ONC, to improve patient care in the geographically isolated area.

"Our providers on Hawaii Island are among the nation's early adopters of best practices in health IT supported care delivery transformation. According to SK&A Research, close to 40 percent of our primary care providers have achieved Stage 1 Meaningful Use of their EHRs. We have made a remarkable journey in three years," said Susan B. Hunt, MHA, project director and CEO of HIBC, in the news release.
