Michigan Physician Portal Could Aid HIE Efforts

While healthcare markets in Michigan are worried the Michigan State Medical Society's physician portal could pose as competition, MSMS asserts its platform is meant to "be a complement to the [health information exchanges] of Michigan," according to a Healthcare IT News report.

Ben Louagie, senior director of operations for MSMS, said he does not consider the physician portal as an HIE. Rather, MSMS' physician portal could eventually serve as a link to other regional HIEs. The society's physician portal was first designed as an alternative marketplace for EHR systems, but the portal already features other functions designed by the American Medical Association, including research-based tools for clinical decision support.

The society is now working to ramp up the physician portal with other functionalities that would allow physicians to securely communicate with each other through the portal while staying compliant to HIPAA law.
