2.2k consultants working on Epic rollout at Mayo cause parking woes for employees

The nearly 2,200 consultants visiting Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic to help in its $1.5 billion IT modernization efforts, which include its transition to a new Epic EHR, are causing parking issues for hospital employees, according to Post Bulletin.

Mayo implemented a series of parking restrictions from May 5 to May 25 in which certain areas are restricted "to voting and consulting staff use 24 hours a day on weekdays." Staff were notified of the temporary parking and shuttle changes via "Mayo News Bulletin" postings on the Mayo Clinic intranet, Post Bulletin reports.

The Rochester campus went live on Epic May 5 after hospital staff dedicated months to training on the new computer system.

"It's only been about three or four days, so we're cautiously optimistic," Steve Peters, MD, who is working closely with Mayo's Epic rollout, told KTTC. "But so far things have gone as well, and even perhaps a little better than expected."

There have been a few glitches, but most involved the human element — specifically, navigating workflows. Hospital officials expect those issues to resolve as time goes on and staff become more familiar with the new EHR, according to KTTC.

Mayo Clinic is in the midst of a systemwide Epic implementation that will put all its hospitals on a single EHR. The $1.5 billion estimate encompasses a number of technology investments associated with the transition, which it began at Wisconsin locations in the summer of 2017. Its campuses in Arizona and Florida will transition in October.
