Cyberattacks top list of risks for executives

Cyberattacks and data breaches continue to hold the primary position as the foremost present and future threat, both on a global scale and among C-suite leaders, a Nov. 7 survey from consulting firm Aon found.

The survey gathered insights from 3,000 participants spanning 61 countries and territories and encompassing 16 major industries, including both public and private enterprises of various scales, and found that cybersecurity was among respondents' top 10 future risks.

This comes as ransomware attacks increased more than 1,010% during the third quarter of 2023 compared to their level in the first quarter of 2019, despite a decrease in 2022, according to the survey.

The other risks C-suite leaders said they were concerned about included:

  • Business interruption
  • Economic slowdown or slow recovery
  • Failure to attract or retain top talent
  • Regulatory or legislative changes
  • Supply chain or distribution failure
  • Commodity price risk or scarcity of materials
  • Damage to reputation or brand
  • Failure to innovate or meet customer needs
  • Increasing competition
