An Ebola survivor in the Democratic Republic of Congo gave birth to a healthy baby girl Jan. 6 who has shown no signs of the virus, according to an update from the University of Minnesota's Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy in Minneapolis.
The baby marks the first infant born to an outbreak survivor. The baby's mother contracted the virus in December and agreed to have the baby at an Ebola treatment center in the city of Beni. Health officials tested the baby twice for Ebola, and both tests came back negative.
Last month, health officials reported the first baby born with Ebola in the outbreak had survived the virus, while the mother died during childbirth.
As of Jan. 9, Congo health officials reported 628 total Ebola cases, 580 of which are confirmed.
