14 physician leaders-turned-CEOs in 2023

Physicians possess many qualities that make them effective hospital CEOs, including their clinical knowledge, understanding of the healthcare industry and problem-solving skills. 

Here are 14 physician leaders named to CEO roles in 2023: 

1. Clint Seger, MD, was promoted from interim to permanent CEO of Billings (Mont.) Clinic.

2. Monica Hum, MD, was promoted from chief medical officer to CEO of Piedmont Rockdale Hospital in Conyers, Ga.

3. Joon Sup Lee, MD, was named CEO of Atlanta-based Emory Healthcare.

4. Saba Habis, MD, was named CEO of West Hills (Calif.) Hospital, part of Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare. 

5. Scott Klein, MD, was named president and CEO of Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital in Baltimore. 

6. Paul Hancock, MD, was named CEO of Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo., part of Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare. 

7. Jason Fish, MD, was named CEO of New Haven, Conn.-based Yale Health. 

8. Sebastian Strom, MD, was named CEO of HCA Florida Largo Hospital.

9. Ronald Place, MD, was named regional president and CEO of Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center in Sioux Falls, S.D., the flagship facility of Avera Health System.

10. Steven Kalkanis, MD, was named CEO of Detroit-based Henry Ford Hospital in addition to his current role as CEO of the Henry Ford Medical Group.

11. Mark Rosenblatt, MD, PhD, was named interim CEO of Chicago-based University of Illinois Hospital and Clinics. 

12. Steve Gordon, MD, was named president and CEO of Bend, Ore.-based St. Charles Health System.

13. Gene Ma, MD, was named interim CEO of Oceanside, Calif.-based Tri-City Healthcare District. 

14. Cara Beatty, MD, was selected as Providence Clinical Network chief executive for Eastern Washington and Montana.
