Pediatric antimicrobial stewardship programs work, study shows

Evidence strongly shows that antimicrobial stewardship programs can significantly reduce in inappropriate prescriptions among children, according to a study published in Antimicrobial Resistance & Infection Control.

Researchers conducted a review of studies from the Medline, Embase and Cochrane Library databases. They screened 41,916 studies reporting on pediatric antimicrobial stewardship programs and included 113 in their analysis. Most of the studies were in the U.S., but some were conducted in Europe or Asia.

A vast majority of studies (79.6 percent) showed that pediatric antimicrobial stewardship programs were linked to a significant drop in inappropriate prescriptions.
